What's a backlink? A backlink is when another website links back to your site from their site. There are some key things to keep in mind with backlinks.
Where does it come from?
- If it's a domain name that's been around for awhile and has excellent rankings itself, then the backlink counts for more (in SEO terms). An 'authority' backlink (a .edu or a .gov for example) is even more powerful than hundreds of smaller links. These are like 'whale' links and if you can get one, DO IT!
- Google knows all about websites that buy backlinks from other sites. Trust me, they will ban yo ass. Not a good idea if what you want is to get your viewers to your site. We must be friends with the search engines and try not to trick them.
- The words you use as the link is the anchor text. For example, you can hover over (and click) the words anchor text above and it will link you to a moz.com page about anchor texts. You must make the anchor text relevant to your targeted keywords.
There you go. A couple of ways to improve your search engine optimization just by blogging. It's up to you to optimize your site and blogging is an easy way to do this!
